This is Toshiyuki Yasuda's 1st album. ROBO*BRAZILIA is a slow tempo of bossa nova with robotic voices singing throughout. Track 9 is a cover of Antônio Carlos Jobim classic song. For this album Toshiyuki Yasuda's had deep aspirations. He was always intrigued by music which at it's core was simple but had complex undertones hidden beneath the surface. Another characteristic of Brazilian music that fascinated him was the darkness which was hidden in light. He felt that all attempts to achieve this utopia never reached the essence of Brazilian music.
He put in robot voices for a good reason. Back in the 1950's music was made to be easy on the ears. He thought that bringing this orthodox style back to life wouldn't do the music justice. To freshen things up, something new had to be added. But if you merely added some electronic sound effects, it would be nothing but mere dressing on a cake. A robot's voice fulfills that desire to be simple but complex underneath and was something new and unique.
Another interesting aspect of this new style of Bossa Nova is the quasi-Portuguese that is used through out. Toshiyuki Yasuda's felt that lyrics are a mere representation of sound reverberating. Precisely because the words have no meaning gives it a stronger resonance in the back of a person's sensory glands.
