Inugami Circus Dan is a hard rock Visual Kei band fronted by female vocalist Inugami Kyouko. Filling out the rest of the band is Inugami Jouji II on guitar, Inugami Zin on bass, and Inugami Akira on drums. They wear makeup that takes its cues from a mixture of gothic and kabuki, and the men of the band wear Japanese military-inspired uniforms, recalling a Japanese aesthetic of decades and decades ago.
Musically they often have a blues and hard-rock sound tinged with elements of garage and lo-fi, with melodies that can sound like popular songs from Japan's early Showa era. In some songs Kyouko will not sing but perform a spoken-word piece as the band plays on, occasionally accenting the words when necessary. Their lyrical themes are often dark and disturbing, touching on either sexual or social topics. They have also created an elaborate back-story for themselves, an esoteric tale of religion and sorcerers bringing a message to humanity.
The band formed in 1994 when Kyouko placed an advertisement in the influential alternative manga magazine Garo, and were on a major label for a few years before returning to the indies scene. Over their 16 years of activity, they have released several singles and albums, a few of these being concept albums, and they continue to have a strong influence on Japan's underground rock scene today.
The members of Inugami Circus Dan have also released music under a light-hearted side-project called Angelique.
