Over the past 10 years, Dr. Usui has been a leading figure in Tokyo's new wave and electro-pop scene. In 1998, he and his band Motocompo were instrumental figures in the Tokyo new wave revival along with bands such as Polysics. With their debut album "Desktop Romancer", Motocompo also pioneered the 8-bit "Chiptune" Technopop sound that has become the signature of recent groups such as YMCK.
Since then, Dr. Usui has continued to develop Motocompo's sound, introducing elements of disco, house and electro, culminating in a successful 2007 UK tour. He has also been active as a producer and remixer for numerous bands, and as the owner of leading electro-pop label Poplot Records, released both domestic bands and international artists such as DMX Krew and Swedish electronic musician Andreas Tilliander.
Well acquainted with the European Electro scene, Dr. Usui has quite the reputation with his edgy synth work and club kid oriented rhythms. Upon hearing samples of his works, the promoters for the new-found "Great Escape" festival in the U.K. were quick to offer him a gig in the upcoming event (only one months notice, mind you!). Needless to say, at the present, Dr. Usui excitedly preparing for this show. Some other Japanese acts participating in this festival include, Doping Panda and Monobright.
Dr. Usui's solo debut "Datajockey" confirms his position as one of Japan's top electro musicians and one of the few who can make truly world-standard electro music.
